OVERVIEW
Biopsy is a procedure that involves the removal of a small specimen of tissue for laboratory examination and in most cases, biopsy remains the gold standard for confirmation of diagnosis. A biopsy may be advised when the clinical examination and other investigations show suspicious findings.
Biopsy is a simple surgical procedure that can be done in outpatient settings and in some cases may be guided by imaging such as an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI. Occasionally, surgery under anaesthesia may be needed to get a tissue sample.
